Nigerian singer and songwriter, Rema, has continued to firmly established himself as one of the biggest names in Afrobeats, a genre that has captivated global audiences with its infectious rhythms.
In a recent interview with the breakfast club, the “Calm Down” crooner explained why he believes he’s earned his spot among the Big 4 in Afrobeat music, joining the ranks of superstars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido.
Rema, born Divine Ikubor, entered the Nigerian music scene in 2019 after signing with Mavin Records, one of the country’s top music labels. His debut single “Dumebi” became an instant hit, winning fans across Africa and beyond with its catchy tune.
Since then, Rema has consistently released chart-topping songs and worked with international stars, including Selena Gomez on the remix of his hit “Calm Down.” The song gained millions of streams and topped global charts, cementing his role as a major figure in the Afrobeat genre.
When asked about his place among the Big 4, Rema confidently highlighted his significant influence on the Afrobeat movement, claiming that he helped spread the genre to new territories, including as far as India.
He proudly noted that the success of his music led a major award to introduce a new category dedicated to Afrobeats.
In his words, “My impact in the journey of beats to the world is huge. No more BIG 3 it’s now BIG 4. Major award shows create categories because of the success of my song. I did huge Arenas in 3 cities in India and Indians in multitude came out to sing Afrobeats word for word. Legend is not about hit songs. Must I be 30 years old to give me my flowers? Time has changed.”
