Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi has opened up about her near-death experience with lupus, revealing how the illness brought her closer to God and changed her perspective on life.
Speaking on Doyin Kukoyi TV on Saturday, August 9, 2025, the Yoruba movie star recalled: “I thank God. The sickness you talk about had drawn me closer to God. Nothing has kept me alive that you can be asking me questions about the unsearchable way of God. He does as He pleases. I get emotional whenever I have to talk about the sickness. It’s in the past, and God has rescued me. I had thought the end had come. I was on the sick bed, unable to eat or drink, breathing with the aid of oxygen. I had already bought the grave I would be buried in. I wrote my will and thought it was all over, but God came to my rescue and said it is not time yet.”
Afolabi revealed that before the illness was properly diagnosed, she was misdiagnosed multiple times: “I never knew the name of the illness before it happened to me. It was diagnosed as all manners of illnesses before we could identify what it was. Lupus is an autoimmune disease—it makes your body system work against itself.”
The actress also expressed gratitude to her family, colleagues, and friends who supported her during the ordeal: “I survived it with the power of God and the support of my family. Members of my family and colleagues that we practiced together stood by me. Some people had similar illnesses and have died, but when something happens to a famous person, it attracts everybody’s interest.”
