According to a report by The Sun Nigeria published on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the disagreement began when Akpabio started reading the official Votes and Proceedings from the Senate’s earlier session.
During the process, Oshiomhole interrupted, arguing that the document did not accurately capture the agreement reached by lawmakers during discussions concerning proposed rules on eligibility for the office of Senate President.
The former Edo State governor attempted to raise a procedural objection, but Akpabio ruled him out of order, explaining that Senate rules do not permit interruptions at that stage of proceedings.
To support the Senate President’s position, former Chief Whip Orji Uzor Kalu stated that Oshiomhole’s action was contrary to Senate procedure.
Despite repeated warnings from the presiding officer, Oshiomhole reportedly remained standing and continued to protest the issue, insisting that the Senate should not approve a document he believed was inaccurate.
The situation intensified further when Chief Whip Tahir Monguno intervened and warned that disciplinary measures could be applied if the disruption continued.
Akpabio later explained the proper sequence of Senate activities and reminded lawmakers about the importance of observing parliamentary rules and waiting for the appropriate time to raise objections or complaints.
According to reports, Monguno cautioned Oshiomhole by saying, “Oshiomhole, if you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate.”
Following the intervention, calm was eventually restored in the chamber and Oshiomhole complied with the directive to sit down.
The Senate then proceeded with its activities and formally adopted the Votes and Proceedings after a motion moved by Adamu Aliero and seconded by Abba Moro.…READ / MORE…
