Speaking during a TVC News interview on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Nyesom Wike argued that the movements of politicians reflect strategic positioning ahead of elections rather than a unified opposition structure.

He specifically referenced Atiku Abubakar, suggesting that the former vice president left the PDP in pursuit of a clearer path to secure a presidential ticket elsewhere, a move he said reflects personal calculation rather than collective strategy.

Wike also commented on the Obidient Movement linked to Peter Obi, questioning shifting political narratives after key court decisions and suggesting that such changes reveal inconsistencies in public positions.

He added that defections are often motivated by access to party nominations rather than ideology, describing them as interest driven.

He further recalled internal disputes within the PDP and said he had played a firm role during past party conflicts, noting that he has openly supported the current administration while affirming that the PDP will continue to contest elections nationally.

Weeks of political realignments across parties have intensified debate about the strength of opposition politics in the country.

According to him, these movements reflect a broader pattern where ambition often outweighs ideology, especially as elections approach and parties position themselves for advantage.

He maintained that political actors frequently shift alliances based on perceived opportunities rather than long standing principles, which he believes weakens opposition cohesion.
