According to a report by Leadership on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Adetokunbo Pearse, a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has addressed the ongoing discussions surrounding leadership legitimacy and internal divisions within the party....WATCH THE VIDEO HERE
He maintained that, in his understanding, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognizes only one official structure of the PDP and does not acknowledge any faction or breakaway leadership within the party.
Pearse explained that INEC’s position is consistent, as it deals with the PDP as a single registered political entity, regardless of internal disagreements or disputes among members. He emphasized that the commission does not validate parallel leadership arrangements.
He further noted that INEC does not interfere in determining party leadership, adding that the electoral body has, in some cases, advised aggrieved members to align with the recognised structure led by Umar Damagum, particularly in situations involving suspensions or internal conflicts.
According to him, the PDP recognised by INEC is the same party registered in 1998, which continues to hold National Working Committee meetings and carry out official activities across the country, representing the only legally acknowledged national structure.
He contrasted this with another group associated with Nyesom Wike, which he described as operating independently, stressing that while it exists, it does not represent the officially recognised leadership of the PDP.
In his words, “There is only one PDP, the one that was registered with INEC in 1998. The one that is holding the National Working Committee meeting, that is PDP. The other one is Wike and company. Their team continues to run. It doesn’t mean anything.”
